HI all: I am having a problem with my baby's not getting out of their eggs... they get the shell about half opened up, and then die so far I have lost about 6 this way this year. I also have lost about 4 the next day after they hatched I find the died in the nest. I should have about 14 new hatched baby's instead I only have 3 any ideals why this is happening? ARE YOU SURE THE BIRDS ARE WARM ENOUGH AND THE OLD BIRDS ARE FEEDING THEM, VERRY STRANGE IS THIS TOPIC, I KNOW I HELPED A PIGEON OUT OF ITS EGG BEFORE BUT YOU SEEM TO HAVE LOST A LOT OF BIRDS

Hey thanks for your post... I am in Michigan, but we are having a very warm winter. It has been in the high 30s and low 40s ever sence my birds started hatching... I am dealing with first time parents, as I mostly have 05 birds... this is my first year breeding, I was told not to help open eggs? I go in the loft about noon an the eggs are about have opened and I can see the chicks moving in them... Then I go back in the loft about 5:00pm when I get home from work and they are not out of the shell, and the chicks are dead. this is very disheartening to me Gary

ARE THE EGGS BEING SAT WELL ENOUGH AS YOUNG BIRDS WILL NOT SIT AS WELL AS OLD BIRDS
IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE BABYS ARE NOT WARM ENOUGH TO GET OUT THE EGGS, MAYBE THE PARENTS ARE NOT SITING THEM WELL ENOUGH.

Thanks to ALL who are trying to help me!!! I am not sure, about how well the cocks and hens are at keeping the eggs warm... every time I go into the loft; it looks like a parent is on the nest. I am feeding a good quality pigeon feed mixed with whole corn, I mix 50#s of feed to 50#s of corn. This is what other breeders in my racing club have advised me to feed for this time of year. I have free choice Pigeon pellets in the loft, all of the time, also I have free choice grit & oyster shells in the loft at all times. I mix vitamins into their water 2 or 3 times a week. I did do one thing this last month that may have had an effect on them... I wormed the birds with Ivomic in their water... 28cc to one gallon of water and then repeated the same in 10 days. What about helping to open shells... when I see them half open, and the chicks still alive in them should I open them the rest of the way?
Thanks again for all of your suggestion... this is GREAT to have a forum like this to look to for help.
Gary

I WOULD LOOK TO SEE HOW MUCH LIFE IS IN THE BABY, IF IT LOOKS LIKE ITS NOT GONNA GET OUT THEN MAYBE THINK ABOUT HELPING IT.
IT JUST SEEMS STRANGE THAT ALL THE BABYS ARE HAVING TROUBLE

it is nothing to d owith the birds.your wether sound simular to here in australia and this year a lot of people have had this.it is due to the humidity...i had a lot of trouble with it this year and once i started spraying the nests.and eggs slightly every couple of days wit ha very fine mist of water things were right..just use one of those hair spray type bottles or put a bath on the loft floor for the birds

Look i can garuntee it is from the humiditity!nothing wrong with the parents..after all how are the parents going to infect them while they are still in the egg....it happens a lot here.
