Ok, i know almost nothing about birds, i have a budgie and am working on plans for a new cage for her, but thats as far as i go with birds.
A pigeon turned up yesterday, it was wandering around. We thought it had just stopped off and would be on its way, We were wrong. it slept on the roof and was trying its hardest to get in the garage this morning.
At about 2 o clock the native minors started attacking it so Mum lured it into the budgies old cage. When I got home from School I moved it to a spare guinea pig cage which is basically the same as a large budgie cage but with larger bar spacings.
We've given it a bowl of water, a bowl of budgie seed, a perch and have covered it up for the night.
I honestly dont know what to do with it. We havn't seen its band number yet, so all we know is it has a green band. i'll have another go at looking in the morning.
How do we go about finding its owners? Its rather pretty and i'd love to keep it, but it's not mine and someones probably truly missing it right about now.

well done you have looked after it well and done exactly the right thing
if you can hold the bird and open its wing then you should find the owners phone number on it if its been stamped on
when u hold it hold the birds feet in your fingers so it cant fly off

Sigh, we contacted our local club, they contacted the owner and what joy. The owners over 300 k's away. Cos apaprently the MAS on her band means she come sfrom Mascot, we haven't found her exact owner but the guy we spoke to said he didnt have much hope that they'd wnat her back cos shes been gone so long now.
It dosn't seem to have any inclination to leave, it's made a roost on the roof and spends the daytime hanging around the guinea pigs and my budgie on the verandah. blah i hope it dosnt have ticks, i dont want it passing them to the pigs.
Anyways we named it Checkers and next time we are in town we'll try and find some pigeon feed, i doubt budgie seed is very good for it LOL.
So we had a look at prices for wood and avairies and that so the next question is, How the heck do you build a pigeon coop? We sure aren't gonna let it spend all day and night out, Even though its up on the roof theres still the possibilty a stray cat could get up there or something.
Once we recatch her we'll move her to the chook coop, until I've got enough money to buy supplies to build her her own home.
Sigh, oh well looks like I've got another pet LOL.
