Hi all. My name is Simon, I have just join the forum. I am wanting to start pigeon racing, but really don't know where to start. Can anyone help with some advice on the best way to start? I have a 15ft x 5ft shed which I would like to use for my loft. I have been advised that the best way to start is to split the shed into two sections, one for breeding and the other section for racing. Can anyone help with what boxes etc I will need to purchase. All advise gratefully received. Cheers Simon.

Yes have a local pigeon club, where I live in Wiltshire that I am planning to join and plan on joining the RPRA. I do not have a birds as the moment, but I do have 4 pairs set aside from a mate who is a pigeon fancier. I am 30 years old. I would really like more advice from other pigeon fanciers about the best way of setting up my pigeon loft. I am thinking of spliting my shed into two sections, using pipo boxes with some v purches for the breeding section and slope off purches in the racing section. I only want to keep about 25 pigeons to begin with. Any advice gratefully received. Cheers

Well, things to think of.
if you dont buy the british homing world or racing pigeon mag then get to the paper shop asap, loads of good stuff every week.
how competative do u want to be. its best to start with good birds or you coud be set back years. then is down to money etc etc. look each week to see who wins alot etc and buy from him or people and cross the birds.
you need to build teams
Old bird team, young bird team. thats two sections gone like that.
choose a system. and get some books and videos
you could race old birds on natural (eggs and babys) racing the birds back to these.
widowhood is better for the sprints but will need an extra section for the hens.
Fresh water each day, grit for the birds and fresh air, no damp
and you will get a good start in a super sport. when they come well you will be hooked

simon don't worry bout stock birds yet...go buy a team of youngsters of a top flyer.race these and race them hard then breed from them the following year.devide your cage ,put hens one side cocks other side and race em natural....widow hood ect is far to much stuffing about for a newcomer to worry about

i agree but would say that young from other lofts never seem to settle and dont home well. this year i had some in from different places and have lost them leaving me with the birds i bred myself.
i would say to get some yearlings this year from a local flyer and break them to your loft, brocken pigeons fly well. get them on eggs next year and breed a team from them for young bird season racing the cocks and hens natural in the OB season.
loads of yearlings will be for sale from now till xmas

Thanks for your advice. The stock birds I am getting from my mate are only for me to breed some young birds, for the coming season. I will not be keeping these birds, as they are from a good stock. I am going to use the youngs birds I have left from the end of young bird season to start my own family of pigeons. Once I have given the breeding pigeons back, I was thinking of keeping the cocks and hens seperate and showing the cocks to the hens and vice a versa for 1/2 hour before racing. Would this be a good way of doing it? What purches and boxes would you recommed using this way of flying (pipo box purches, slope off purches or ). Thanks

this is the widowhood
i would say get yourself on ebay and get a good video/DVD on the subject, people you race against wont tell you everything, just like people on forums ;D or DVD in fact.
you need nest boxes for widowhood i will put some pics up
