I said yes, but only because I did send them to the 1st race last year and I plan on sending them this year as well. This will be my 4th young bird season. Last year I was confident that they were ready and in excellent condition, so I shipped them. They placed 1st, 2nd, 20th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd (280 birds). 17 of my 20 birds shipped returned.
My first 2 young bird seasons, however, I did not ship to the 1st race. I did not feel the birds were ready. Both of these years I had a great deal of trouble with hawks, and when the first race arrived, I felt they had not yet reached adequate form, so I waiting 2 more weeks.
Basically, I think if they are ready, then why not ship? It seems if you experience a lot of losses, then there is a good chance that the birds simply are not ready. It might be wise to start training a few weeks earlier next year. At least, that is what worked for me.
I am curious as to what other reasons flyers experience so many losses on the first race, but I would think the biggest reason would be the birds' lack of experience. That is why I like to send my youngsters on the training truck with other birds a couple of times before the first race, though I am skeptical about group tossing during training, because I feel they should be trained separate from others’ birds for the first several weeks of their training careers, as they will learn to go straight home and not to follow other birds.

First two young bird races are always missed as you are sure to pick up any ailments that are doing there rounds by the third race the sickly have all gone and good racing usually follows.

im only just starting up after 20 yrs out, but everyone ive been talking to who has not lost many young birds, has not raced them, & if they have/ they have made sure they are well trained. everyone i have spoke to says you shouldnt really race the young birds, as years ago, many didnt & if they did it was a bit of fun.

In my opinion racing young birds is a very important part of schooling! I find birds not raced as young birds generally dont return from race's as old birds! Although i could well be proven wrong!! ;D

I always send my youngbirds to every race from the first till last and always will.last year was my first ever youngbird season and i won my first two youngbird races i entered, finishing 2nd youngbird average in a very strong club.BUT i wouldnt send them if i didnt think they where ready, they where trained up to 40 miles having say 20 tosses before the first race.I have flown 2 youngbird seasons now and will start my youngbird season with around 70 youngsters, both seasons i have been left with around 40 youngsters from 70 leaving me easy enough for the following year.
if they are well trained they should get home

as u can see or maybe gather from above txts ,training is everything because if the ground work is poor then the outcome is poor , a friend once told me that he would be training upto the day before a race and it never failed him he would say the more tosses the better but dont forget to give them a refreshing drink of energizer at the trapping

I used to send just half the team and pick out the ugly ones to send and those I did not like. However, recently I have sent every bird and lost next to none of them. However, I do not pratt about with their training. The first toss is 15 miles and they have to think. It holds them in good stead later.
